I’ve experienced a lot of equipment since I started working in video production. From handycam, semi-pro video camera, professional video camera, two DSLR video cameras and now a mirrorless DSLR with external recorder… Every equipment has its own pros and cons. Some are easy to use for some projects and others might get you killed trying. The only thing in common is, that they all do video.
After a long and very hard year we needed a vacation somewhere far away. So we went to Tunisia. By luck we went to highest standard hotel in El Mouradi Palace. Tunisia tourism had very low season and many hotels were closed. So we were transferred to one of few still open. And even in that hotel there were not many people. After we went home, the season ended because of low interest. The cause were two terrorist attacks in Tunis and at a beach just a kilometer away from our hotel. We still had very good time there and would love to go back anytime.
There was one thing I probably never mentioned about my change in video production gear three years ago. Selling my two cameras Sony Z1 and Canon HG10, moving to Canon 550D, Canon 5D Mark III and now the Sony A7s with Atomos Shogun. Two things really inspires me with DSLR’s…. candid images and depth of field. Two things I’ve never got with those two cameras and even today many higher budget video cameras can’t achieve. And if they can, they are too big to work daily on run and gun shooting sets.
While working with big video files you need a fast internet connection, which I don’t have and my parents do. Where I lived before I had fiber internet connection which was great for sending big files. But now I have to reorganize my workflow with a server on that fiber connection where I send my files to (on slow 4Mbps upload) and then send forward to more locations. For such work I needed a simple, small, efficient, economical computer.
Long story short; there is no camera (yet) that can cover my needs.
Unless you work as a news cameraman, there is no such thing as one-man-band video production. It’s simple. Video production is team work, where every aspect has it’s own specialization. One guy handling all the process in production is unrealistic or a scam. Unless this one-man-band has gone through directing courses, camera handing courses, DOP courses, make-up courses, editing courses, organizing courses and special effects courses and he can duplicate himself to all those needs on sets, he is NOT video production.
